Immaculata focuses on helping you find the major that matches your interests,

College is a time for exploration and self-discovery; as a young adult you don’t need to know exactly what you want to do with the rest of your life. Though it may appear that everyone else knows his or her major when starting college, it’s actually more common not to know and that’s 100% okay!

而不是仓促决定一个专业, we recommend that you start out in a program designed to help you learn more about your options and more about yourself. Then, when you do declare your major, it will be a really good fit, perfect for you!

选择在 未申报/决定程序 will be the right path to begin your college journey if you:

  • have lots of interests and might not be ready to settle on a specific major
  • want to learn about more options and really understand the possibilities for your future

“I came in freshman year and had no idea what I wanted to major in or what I was good at. The Undecided program was a guiding hand that helped me learn what I may be interested in and what I could see myself doing. They curated a schedule to give me a variety of different courses and disciplines."

You can look at areas of interest before you make a commitment.

In the “Major Information” section of the 应用程序, simply choose “Undecided.“一旦你在印第安纳大学注册, you will be assigned an academic advisor specializing in exploratory studies, 谁将协助你的学术计划.
  • You will work closely and collaboratively with your assigned academic advisor in the Office of Academic Success and 建议.
  • 当你踏上这段旅程, 你将参加特别设计的节目, 包括团体活动, 个人建议, and completion of career/personality inventories to assist with exploring their values, 优势和性格类型.
  • Your academic advisor will coordinate a meeting with you and a career coach in the Career and Professional Development Office to learn more about careers that interest you and to complete other career related activities.
  • 我们有信心在你的大一结束时, you will be well informed and ready to select your major.

Just waiting and hoping will not necessarily help you explore.

You may feel that you are the only one who has not chosen a major. The reality is that more students enter as undeclared students than anything else.

有些专业比其他专业更容易换, but no student should continue in a major that you don’t feel is the right fit.

4: “When I choose a major I’ll have chosen a career for my entire life.”

That major may lead to a specific career, but it also may not. 还记得, 太, that most people today change jobs and even career paths several times throughout their lives. 事实上, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that Baby Boomers, 平均, 换了11份工作.

误区5: “There’s a test that will match me to my perfect major”

There are self assessment inventories to use as 太ls for exploring yourself, majors, and careers. However, there is no one test or inventory that definitively matches you to the perfect major. 在选择专业时缩小你的选择范围, 我们建议综合使用库存结果, regular meetings with your academic advisor and IU’s career specialist, and research about majors that you will complete independently.

误区6: ”If I start as undecided, I won’t finish in time to graduate with my friends.”

对于Immaculata的大部分学位课程来说, you can declare your major during the Spring semester of your freshman year and be on track for graduation. 85% of our undecided students declare their major at the end of their first year and still graduate on time. It is very rare that a student starting out as Undecided does not graduate in four years. 有时, making a quick decision about a major can lead to dissatisfaction and then a change in major after two or even three years. Changing your mind at that point can affect your anticipated graduation date.

误区7: ”If I commit to a single major I have to let go of all my other dreams and plans.”

We find that many students who are undecided about choosing a major have many interests. 还记得 that there are many ways to combine programs; the most common way is to add a minor in your second or third year at Immaculata. 所有学位都需要选修课程, 这样你就可以去上课,探索其他的兴趣, even when the courses are not part of your selected major.

  • 研究显示 that students who take the time and make the effort to explore majors graduate at higher rates than students who commit to a major early.
