Since nearly every job opening across the nation requires good oral and written communication skills, this ubiquitous major delves into exciting careers that transcend oral and written skills.
As a communication major, you will develop theoretical and practical skills, participate in two valuable internships, and interact with professionals in the field.

"I was set up for success upon graduation. The Communication degree program required the completion of two internships, which pushed me to start thinking seriously about life after graduation. The support and encouragement I received from my advisor gave me the confidence to apply for numerous internships during my senior year. I landed an internship with QVC’s email marketing team during my final semester, which I was able to turn into a full time e-commerce associate position once graduating. My classes at IU covered a wide range of topics, which gave me the knowledge that has allowed me to excel in my career. From professional writing and marketing ethics to cross-cultural business studies and digital media courses, I felt more than prepared to enter a corporate work setting and succeed."

Several national honor societies recognize the achievements of communication majors. Immaculata offers Alpha Psi Omega (the national honorary dramatic fraternity: IU chapter of Iota Nu); Sigma Tau Delta (international collegiate honor society for students of English: IU chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma); Lambda Pi Eta (national honor society for communication students)
If you’re interested in expanding your collegiate experience and want to gain exposure to various communication skills, you can participate in the drama club, Cue and Curtain Players; write for the student newspaper, the Immaculatan; or submit entries for the annual literary magazine, 朝圣.
Within this major, you will choose from one of two tracks:
- Public Relations and Journalism strengthens your professional writing skills to prepare you for careers focused on reporting, managing company messages, representing an organization professionally, and handling crises.
- Digital Communication combines traditional communication classes with emerging technologies, social networking, and online media outlets. This track includes two sub-tracks, broadcast media or graphic design.
A degree in communication can lead to careers in broadcast and print journalism, digital communication and social media; advertising and marketing; media relations, creative writing and public relations, 举几个例子.
